The designation of Origin Rioja groups together some wines primarily from vineyards of the autonomous communities of La Rioja and the Basque Country, and to a lesser extent Navarre and Castile and Leon.
The vine growing starts in La Rioja in times of the Romans, Phoenicians and primitive Celts. From its ancient origins, the history of Rioja wines evolves to the creation of Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Rioja en 1926.
Its production is distributed among the white varieties: viura, malvasía, white garnacha, white maturana, white tempranillo, turruntés, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and verdejo; and red varieties: tempranillo, red garnacha, mazuelo, graciano, red maturana, brown maturana and monastel.
